Citizens' Summit adopts Salzburg Manifesto

Democracy experts from across Europe applauds EP Resolution on the European Citizens' Initiative and recommends further improvements. Summit decides to launch transnational working programme for the ECI.

It is the year of decisions, in Europe, Ireland and within the European institutions. Very soon, we, the European citizens, shall have the same right as the EU Parliament and the Council vis-a-vis the Commission, namely the right to propose new EU legislation. However, this new European Citizen Initiative (Art. 11.4 TEU-ToLisbon), must first be equipped with a supportive and citizen-friendly implementation law. At the 2009 European Citizen Initiative Summit on May 8/9 in Salzburg/Austria experts and activist from all across Europe discussed key recommendations for this entry point into new democractic territory. IRI co-hosted the Summit together with the Austrian Insitute for European Law and Policy.
